Unicum the most unique liquor

UNICUM

Hungary’s Secret Cure-All Elixir

Unicum is a unique and iconic Hungarian bitter liqueur that has been produced continuously since 1790. With its complex blend of over 40 different herbs and spices, Unicum has a distinctive and robust flavor profile that has made it beloved in Hungary for over 200 years. While it may seem like an acquired taste to some, Unicum holds an important place in Hungarian culture and heritage.

Unicum was originally created by Dr. Zwack as a medical tonic and digestif. Being one Hungary’s national drinks, it’s origin dates back to 1790, when Austrian emperor Joseph II tried it for his stomach problems and then happily said: Das ist ein Unicum! The production of this bitters really started in the 19th century, and has been going on for centuries based on the very same recipe. Dr. Zwack’s tonic gained popularity in the Austro-Hungarian Empire as a cure-all remedy and digestif.

The base ingredients of Unicum are a closely-guarded secret, but it is known to contain at least 40 different herbs, roots, and spices. The full flavor profile is intense, bitter, and herbaceous. Unicum has subtle notes of burnt sugar, orange peel, earthy roots, pine, and warming spices like clove and nutmeg. The finish is slightly medicinal with a menthol undertone. The alcohol content is 40%.

Unicum is traditionally served chilled in a tulip-shaped cordial glass. It can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed into cocktails.

It is best slowly sipped and contemplated as you would a fine Scotch or Cognac. Breathe in its complex bouquet before taking a small sip.
Roll it around the mouth, noting how the flavors emerge and transition. Let it finish long on the palate. The medicinal bitterness stimulates the appetite and digestion like a good Amaro.
Enjoy it before or after meals as a palate-cleansing ritual.

With its rich history and uniquely complex medicinal flavors, it’s easy to see why Unicum has been a Hungarian institution for centuries. Sipping this secret “elixir of life” is the perfect way to experience an integral part of Hungary’s culture and cuisine. The bold bitterness awakens the senses and whets the appetite for the vibrant flavors yet to come.
